Battery Energy Storage
As the world explores new and better ways to achieve clean, reliable power, energy storage solutions are becoming increasingly important to grid stability as intermittent renewable generation capacity grows. Utility-scale battery energy storage addresses numerous challenges around intermittency of wind and solar energy, enabling more deployment of renewable generation by increasing grid reliability and reducing renewable generation curtailment.
A West Coast energy storage developer engaged Lummus Consultants to conduct an independent technical and environmental assessment during a portfolio refinancing. The client operated a large portfolio of utility-scale, lithium-ion battery energy storage projects in California consisting of more than 600 MW in operation or under construction. When it was energized in 2020, the largest project in the portfolio, at 250 MW, constituted the largest-capacity battery energy storage system (BESS) in the world.
Lummus Consultants brought a strong combination of power industry expertise and independent engineering experience to this BESS project, also relying on significant experience with similar equipment in other applications. Our independent engineering review included technology evaluation, condition assessment, project agreements, suppliers and contractor capabilities, performance, operation and maintenance, construction status, environmental factors, Equator Principals, and the financial model.
The scope of work included a review of inspection and operating reports to assess the condition of the plants and equipment and determine key maintenance cost drivers. One project factor was our assessment of capacity degradation, a key driver in the plants’ ability to achieve performance targets. We reviewed environmental site assessments and permits, as well as construction and capability of suppliers. With the financing in place, the developer has continued to grow and expand its portfolio, today operating the largest, nonutility-owned energy storage portfolio in the United States.
